Call for papers: Jesuits as Counsellors
Panel proposal Cfp: Jesuits as Counsellors
We invite papers on the theme of ‘Jesuits as Counsellors’ for the Annual Meeting of the Renaissance Society of America, 27-29 March 2014 (New York). The panel or panels will explore the many ways in which early modern Jesuits advised individuals and communities. For instance, papers could look at the notions, genres and rhetoric of Jesuit counsel as well as the motivations, guidelines and forms of expertise that prompted and instructed members of the Society of Jesus to act as counsellors. Issues, conflicts and debates surrounding the role of Jesuits as counsellors – for instance, the precarious boundary between spiritual and political counsel – are also particular points of interest. Papers may present particularly rewarding case studies or trace changes in the role and areas of Jesuit counsel and expertise during the early modern period.
Please send a paper title, brief abstract (150 words), keywords, and a brief curriculum vitae to: Harald E. Braun (History, University of Liverpool, UK) firstname.lastname@example.org by 1 June 2013.
The invitation is open to scholars from all disciplines. Selected papers might be considered for publication in the Journal of Jesuit Studies.
